     Bee Balm - Monarda

Although one sometimes sees the neglected garden where Bee Balm has gone on rampage, in a well-kept border they provide satisfaction and a bright spot of summer color. The leaves have a minty scent, bees and hummingbirds are enticed by their tubular flowers. From 2 to 3 feet tall, colors range from white and pinky lavender through clear pink to bright red.  The flowers bloom for the most part in summer.  They like moist soil, sun or light shade, and are ideal for naturalizing or a wildflower garden.  If they are planted in the garden border, cut them back after blooming, and divide each spring to keep them within bounds because they send out runners and can easily take over.
