Meadow Sage - Salvia

The Salvia genus not only includes the herb, garden sage, and the familiar brilliant red and purple annual salvias, but also perennial varieties that grow from 2 to 5 feet tall with masses of small blue or lavender flowers on long spikes.  Salvias are vigorous growers and many have aromatic foliage.  They like full sun and sandy, dry garden soil that is not too fertile.  Although hardy to zone 4, they may need protection in those colder garden spots around mid-coast and central Maine.

A strong bloomer, Caradonna features a bevy of violet-purple flowers starting in June. These flowers are strung along a multitude of spikes held above fragrant foliage made even more attractive by the glowing purple color of the spikes and stems themselves, lending a color intensity that makes this plant even more of an attention getter.

Matures 12-18" tall and 15-18" wide.      Hardy to Zone 4

Common Name: 'Meadow Sage'
Botanical Name : Salvia nemorosa  'May Nightl'

'May Night' is a classic perennial garden plant. It had the distinction of being named Perennial Plant of the Year (1997) by the Perennial Plant Association. This Salvia has the most formal appearance of its variety; its foliage is tight and compact, and the flowers are neat and bright. The dark violet-blue flowers appear in the late spring, and with a little pruning will remain throughout the summer. Cutting the spent flower stalks back not only extends the plant's blooming time, but also encourages the plant to remain compact. A clump forming plant, 'May Night' can reach the height of eighteen inches. Pruning can enable it to grow taller, because it prevents the stalks from collapsing.

Matures 15-18" tall x 18-24" wide.      Hardy to Zone 4
