Iris Iris should be considered an important part of every garden because they fill a void between spring bulbs and summer flowers. But even if they did not fill this need, their beauty is too startling to miss. Iris take their name from the Greek goddess of the rainbow and come in a wide variety of lovely colors. All have flat, sword-shaped foliage and a flower form consisting of three outer petals and three inner petals, which are often upright. All Iris prefer full sun, but each variety has specific soil and moisture requirements. None of the varieties can tolerate a winter in wet soil, and all need to be divided periodically so the roots do not become crowded.
