Hydrangea

Hydrangeas are diverse shrubs noted for large flowers clusters, which may be mounded, globular, flat, or spiked. Each flower head has both sterile and fertile florets. The sterile flowers are the showy ones. They are one to one and one half inches in diameter and can be white, pink, purple, or blue, depending on both the variety of hydrangea and the acidity of the soil. In 2008 we have selected two late season hardy varieties to compliment two mophead flowering varieties and quite frankly we're excited about all of the choices.

Common Name: Endless Summer TM 'Hydrangea'
Scientific Name : Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bailmer'

Here's a plant to shout about from the highest mountaintop! 'Endless Summer'TM has revolutionized the macrophylla Hydreagea market because, unlike all of the others, it blooms reliably on new wood. That means glorious, beefy blue, pom-pom flowers every early-July and lasting late into the summer even if last year's branches are winter damaged right down to the ground. Now people in some of the coldest spots in Maine can grow this summer charmer instead of just dreaming about it. Deep green foliage serves a perfect backdrop to 4-6' diameter flowers that get even bluer in more acid soils. If you have room for only one Hydrangea, pick 'Endless Summer'TM.

Common Name: Penny Mac 'Hydrangea'
Scientific Name : Hydrangea macrophylla 'Penny Mac'

Here's the plant that started the trend toward repeat blooming Hydrangea and you'll love it because it's a tough and reliable re-bloomer that performs beautifully in the landscape. Big, blue, 7" diameter mop head flowers cover this plant starting in early July and continuing on right through August. 'Penny Mac' is very bud hardy and a very reliable bloomer in Zone 5 and its outstanding, compact habit make it easy to use singularly or in groups. What a fitting tribute to Penny McHenry, the founder of the American Hydrangea Society.
Add aluminum sulfate to your soil to change pink blooms to blue.

.
Common Name: Annabelle 'Hydrangea'
Scientific Name : Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle'

Annabelle is a stunning white hydrangea, often producing heads over 10" in diameter. Unlike the better known blue and pink hydrangeas (macrophyllas), Annabelle blooms every year even after severe pruning or intensely cold winters. The huge, white "drumstick" blooms appear in profusion without fail. Some people plant 'Annabelle' as a hedge since it can be cut back severely in the winter for a tidy effect.
