Daylily - Hemerocallis

Forty years ago an entry on the rather ordinary daylily would have merited only a short description, but since that time the rust-colored tawny, the yellow-lemon lily, and the common early orange daylily have been hybridized into thousands of gorgeous flowers that deserve a prominent place in every garden.  Fortunately, most of the qualities of old-time daylilies, including vigor, hardiness dependability and ease of culture and propagation, have not been greatly diminished.  At present, they are probably the perennial most planted in American gardens.  The daylily has been described as the perfect flower because it grows so easily, multiplies well, is easy to care for, and is not susceptible to insects or diseases.  The lily like shape fits well in a formal garden, yet is natural enough to plant along paths, fences and foundations.  For the more practical gardener, the buds and blossoms are delicious stir-fried, and the roots can be peeled and cooked or sliced into salads.  How's that for an all-around plant!
