Coral Bells - Heuchera

Picture a large flower border completely edged with red or pink Coral Bells, it would be an impressive sight!  The leaf clumps of this dainty plant are compact and grow only a few inches tall.  The brightly colored stalks of tiny bell shaped flowers are borne of 15" flower spikes.  Heucheras like rich, moist soil, full or nearly full sun and requires some winter protection if snow cover is uncertain.  In addition to borders they are good rock garden plants and even a clump or two tucked here or there along the border is always effective because of their long blooming season.

Common Name:  'Coral Bells'
Scientific Name : Heuchera  'Canyon Belle'

This Santa Barbara Botanic Garden introduction is a very compact selection with a very big garden impact. Rosettes of dark green, somewhat glossy, 2" wide leaves emerge early and are immediately outshined by a springtime display of very showy reddish flowers held aloft on 18" stalks.  Flowers bloom starting in May and provide a great, early season source of nectar for moths, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Use this desirable, compact Heuchera in flower foregrounds, as a small-scale groundcover, for edging, in rock gardens or in decorative containers.  'Canyon Belle' is deer resistant and will perform best when planted in partial shade and is quite drought resistant once established.

Matures 5-6" tall and 15-18" wide.         Hardy to Zone 4

Common Name:  'Coral Bells'
Scientific Name : Heuchera  'Dolce Licorice'
Sorry, Sold Out for 2008

It's nearly impossible to capture this great foliage in a photo. You just can't appreciate how this variety grabs your attention in the garden until you see it planted! The best way to describe 'Dolce Licorice' is that is has purple to black, lobed, tropical-looking foliage, dusted with silver that pack densely to form a thick mound of foliage that is impossible no to stare at. It can stand extremely cold temperatures and heavy frost making this a favorite for fall color in the garden at a time when most other plants have packed it in for the winter. 'Dolce Licorice' blooms in the spring with airy bells that rise above the foliage, but its great foliage is what fives it such year round interest. Try planting it in groups or in containers for show in the landscape or on your patio.

Matures with moderate growth to just 8-16" tall and 10-14" wide.          Hardy to Zone 4
