Coneflower - Echinacea

Coneflowers are worthy addition to the garden because they offer a large daisy-type, cone-shaped flower in late summer.  The plants like a sunny spot, but will tolerate light shade, and grow in ordinary good garden soil.  They are long-lived, but need to be divided whenever the clumps get too large-usually every three to four years. Although the purple blooming species (hence the name often used - 'Purple Coneflower') is the most common, we are offering some newer cultivars as well. Featuring a reddish-purple and a vibrant orange variety that is sure to stand out in your garden.  See also Rudebeckias for similar type characteristics.

Common Name: Purple 'Coneflower'
Scientific Name : Echinacea purpurea 'Big Sky Sundown'

Big, vibrant orange blooms decorate this latest release from the Saul Brothers collection on Coneflowers. Its amazing, summer long bloom, color and fragrance are truly memorable, but you'll be more impressed by how well this plant performs in the garden. Even hybridized to obtain its outrageous color and fragrance, 'Big Sky Sundown' takes a back seat to no Echinacea in its ability to grow, thrive and survive in any sunny, well-drained garden. Group it in the middle or back of any garden and then sit back and watch all the birds, moths, and butterflies that come for a visit along with a summer of superb flower color!

Matures 24-30" tall x 18-24" wide.      Hardy to Zone 4.

Common Name: Purple 'Coneflower'
Scientific Name : Echinacea purpurea 'Double Decker'

This robust tall growing plant will bud up in late June and begin blooming in July, showing off big flowers with wide, reddish-purple, reflexed rays around a big, bulbous center cone frosted with orange. Sounds normal right now, but look at the top of the cone and you'll find another small circle of reddish-purple rays on top of the cone looking like a flowering toupee of bloom! Loves full sun and well drained soils and a group planting displaying those outrageous flowers will really turn heads.

Matures 30-36" tall x 18-24" wide.        Hardy to Zone 4.
